Nestled in Lincoln, Nebraska, Lied Center for Performing Arts is a national leader in presenting artists and collaborations normally seen only in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Lied Center’s commitment to presenting internationally celebrated artists continues with its 29th Season and The Legend of Georgia McBride.
During The Legend of Georgia McBride, Casey, a young, goofy Elvis impersonator, finds himself in financial straits when his boss, the owner of a failing country-western bar, brings in his cousin, Miss Tracy Mills, to drum up business. Left with few options, Casey dons a wig and some makeup and goes on as Miss Georgia McBride. Once his stage fright dissipates, Casey discovers he is a natural. However, as his career takes off, he still can't manage to tell his pregnant wife how he makes cash.
The play toggles between quippy comedy and show-stopping dance numbers, with Charles Isherwood of The New York Times commenting that the play was “full of sass and good spirits – along with a spritz or two of sentimentality.”
The Legend of Georgia McBride is written by Matthew Lopez. Lopez is most widely known for his 2006 play The Whipping Man, which garnered an Obie and Lucille Lortel Awards. Lopez currently holds new play commissions from Roundabout Theatre Company, Manhattan Theatre Club, Hartford Stage, and South Coast Rep. Lopez was a staff writer on HBO’s “The Newsroom” and is currently adapting Javier Marias’ trilogy “Your Face Tomorrow” for the screen.
The Lied Center’s vision is to transform the lives of the people of Nebraska through the performing arts by expanding the presentations of artists of great distinction representing all art forms and genres—both from Nebraska and around the world; engaging people and communities from across Nebraska with exceptional experiences; and serving the state as an arts leader and collaborator to celebrate creativity, discovery and diversity.
